Redefining Asian
Moongate Mix
Omnibus Theatre, 1 Clapham Common Northside, London SW4 0QW
£5 Standard £3 Concessions
Moongate is now 'company-in-residence' at the acclaimed Omnibus Theatre in Clapham, London. This is the first of monthly salon performances and events series entitles 'Moongate Mix' (the rest including poetry. music, stand-up and WeRNotVirus 2 - the follow-up to last year's acclaimed new writing event).
The opening panel will interrogate, examine, explore the word 'Asian' with a view to redefining the boundaries of the term to make it more inclusive in our collective cultural reference. For instance, The BBC Asian Network is exclusively South Asian and East Asians - formerly referred to as 'Orientals' have been all but erased from the Asian continent through a colonial gaze and its traditional abject status in British society.
The panelists will consist of South and East/Southeast Asian theatre practitioners and academics in order to spark conversations on updating this terminology and building solidarity across all Asian communities without ignoring the diversity and specificity of their differences.
Panellists:
Dr Diana Yeh
Mingyu Lin
Joy Mohammed
Dr Suman Buchar
Radhika Aggarwal
Abdul Shayek
The panel event is also accompanied by a pop up Asian kitchen (Makan Malaysia) which starts at 5pm.
