Listener Voicemails - FAQs

Our podcast “But Where Are You From?” is ever-evolving and we are delighted to announce that we have a new podcast segment, Listener Voicemails, where we’d like to hear from you - literally!

What we're looking for in Listener Voicemails

  • We would love voicemails where our listeners share from their own experiences (especially experiences from marginalised communities in the ESEA community), and use to share more insights into what it means to be East and South East Asian

  • Some helpful prompts: what part of your ESEA heritage or the ESEA community would you like to honour? How can your experiences shed light for listeners, on what it means to be ESEA?

  • If you listened to a previous episode and felt a strong desire to respond with your own experiences or insights, please feel free to mention that episode title or the guest who featured on it.

Tips for recording a high-quality voicemail

  • Please note we will more likely choose voicemails that are 2 minutes or shorter.

  • Make sure you're in a quiet space, where only your voice can be heard, or there is one voice at a time

  • 2 minutes can pass by very quickly, so we appreciate you planning what you will say

  • At the same time, aim for your recording to sound natural - perhaps by jotting down bullet points rather than a script

How do I send in a voicemail?

To send us your voicemail,

  1. Record a clear voice memo on your phone / device (see above for tips)

  2. Please rename your file to include your name, the theme of your voicemail, and the year and month.

  3. Attach the file to an email, and include in the subject line the words "podcast listener voicemail - {your theme}"

  4. Send to hello@besean.com

  5. If you want to stay anonymous, please let us know in the email.

(E.g. someone sending a message about their feelings around ESEA parents could title their email "podcast listener voicemail - parents in ESEA cultures"

Unless you specify that your message is relevant to a particular date or time of year, please be aware your message, if featured, will not necessarily be played right away on our podcast.

If we don’t choose your voicemail, please don’t be discouraged! We wish we could include all the Messages we receive, and are so grateful to have an engaged community. (You can also get in touch with us, or can submit a pitch for a written article.)
